Lela Virginia (Stump) Bonner, 91, of Reedsville, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Lela was born on the family farm along the South Branch of the Potomac River, 3 miles south of Romney, on May 11, 1923, a daughter to George A. and Hazel Rudell Stump.
She was a 1941 graduate of Romney high school where she lettered in basketball. She attended Potomac State College and Jefferson Medical College for training in medical technology, and later graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor's degree in Biology.
Lela had an extensive background in the field of medicine, working at various hospitals within the region and Washington D.C. Upon returning to Morgantown, she worked at the WVU Health Center under Dr. Lawless and Dr. Trenton, the head pathologist at Monongalia General Hospital at the time.
Lela taught microbiology to nursing students at West Virginia University, and later high school biology at Valley High School in Masontown.
Lela was very active in the community over the years; having been a member of 4-H, Reedsville United Methodist Church, and a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was a woman of many talents and hobbies. She loved winter sports such as ice skating, cross country skiing and hunting. She also loved summer activities which involved hiking, bird watching, fishing, gardening, and bee keeping. She loved to make quilts and cook, and she was an amazing marbles player.
Lela is survived by her loving husband of sixty-five years, Robert "Bob" Bonner, of Reedsville; one daughter, Margaret Spence, of Columbia, SC; two sons: Bill Bonner, of Reedsville and Bob Bonner, of Springs, NY; two sisters: Betty Stump, of Orlando, FL, and Jean Stump, of Beach Garden, FL; seven grandchildren: Travis Bonner, Tim Bonner, William Bonner, Steven Bonner, Elizabeth Bonner, Nelson Spence and Sophie Spence; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Lela was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Bonner; grandson, Bowen Nelson "Bo" Bonner, on March 26, 2015; and a brother, George Stump, Jr.
Friends will be received at the Morgan Funeral Home in Reedsville on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home's chapel on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 1pm, with the Reverend David D. Spence officiating. Interment will follow in the Morgan Memorial Park in Reedsville.
