Dorothy Alverta (Bishop) Riley

Dorothy Alverta (Bishop) Riley, 102, of Arthurdale, West Virginia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Dorothy was born on May 12, 1923, in Albright, WV, a daughter of the late Hoy Bishop and Sarah Irene Beulah (Weimer) Bishop.

Dorothy took great pride in being the oldest current resident of Arthurdale and was also married to the son of an original Arthurdale homesteader. She found joy in life’s simple blessings; tending to her garden, crocheting, and spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking for those she loved. Above all, Dorothy delighted in taking care of others, and she was especially known for feeding the neighborhood kids, always making sure no one left her home hungry.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Michael Riley; four daughters, Marilyn Newcome, Irene Durr, Donna Guire (Kevin), and Mary Zeigler; ten grandchildren, Brandy Chandler (Tommy), Benjamin Riley (Cindy), Mikaela Canterbury (David), Cameron Newcome (Stacey), Lauren Brammer, Anna Edmunds (Justin), Johnna Zeigler (Dylan), Malory Hukkanen, Luke Zeigler (Courtney), and Aubree Bowers (Dylan); thirteen great-grandchildren, Anthony Chandler, Allyson Chandler, Paige Canterbury, Josie Canterbury, Carlee Canterbury, Marsden Brammer, Leni Brammer, Isabella Edmunds, Derek Edmunds, Jana Clark, Scarlett Hukkanen, Piper Hukkanen, and Austin Newcome; and one sister, Beulah Day.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alston Riley; three sons, Brian Riley, Nimrod Riley, and Lonnie Riley; four sisters, Helen Wiles, Sara Taylor, Agnes Woolwine, and Ora Elizabeth Pope; and one great-granddaughter, Leslie Hukkanen.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care, and to Dorothy’s neighbors, Judy and Edgar Shackelford, for their kindness and support.

Family and friends may gather for visitation on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Morgan Funeral Home, 13411 Veterans Memorial Highway, Reedsville, WV, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service, officiated by Reverend David Kisamore. Interment will follow at Arthurdale Cemetery.
