Frederick "Fred" William Turnley

August 12, 1927 ~ December 25, 2020 (age 93)

Frederick “Pappaw” William Turnley, 93, went home to Heaven for Christmas on December 25, 2020, and was reunited with his loving wife Jean, whom he married on November 18, 1944.  Fred was born on August 12, 1927, in Newburg, the son of the late Richard H. and Carra D. Turnley. Selected as one of the first 50 Arthurdale homestead families, the Turnley family was assigned a homestead on O Road.  Fred was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his brothers Howard (Lucille), Pete (Doris), and Joe.

Fred attended the Arthurdale School, beginning in second grade in the Arthur mansion before the Arthurdale schools were built.   He often told of the day in 1938 when he walked to the gym to see President Roosevelt.  While there, he witnessed Secret Service agents remove cameras from newspaper photographers to protect the President’s privacy as he was assisted from his car to the gym.

Fred was drafted into the US Army at the end of the war and was sent via train to Washington state for training.   His unit was then sent to Germany to rebuild the air strips at Wiesbaden.  While in Germany, he received his high school diploma.  Fred was employed in the coal industry, operating a variety of heavy equipment, supervising mining, and maintaining an arsenal of heavy equipment parts and accessories.

Fred is survived by his daughter Rebecca (John) Finch of Grafton and his son Fred (Carolyn) Turnley of Kingwood; grandchildren Chelsea (Stephen) Shine and Crystal (Evan) Bays, of Morgantown; step-grandson Jeremy (Melissa) Layton of Tunnelton; great-grandchildren Atticus Finch and Adeline Grace Bays, Elaina Faith and Anthony Frederick Shine, and step-grandchildren Miranda and Quintin Layton; sisters-in-law Polly (Joe) Elliott, Linda (Howard) Rohr, Johnetta Sypolt, and Ruth Turnley; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Stonerise Kingwood (Pine Ridge) for their loving care of Fred.

Due to the COVID pandemic and guidelines, Fred was privately laid to rest next to his wife by his children at the Arthurdale Cemetery.
