Mildred May (Hofer) Betler

Mildred May (Hofer) Betler, (96), of Nutter Fort, WV passed away with family by her side on March 6, 2013 at the Clarksburg Nursing and Rehab Facility. She was born on October 25, 1916 in the little Swiss village of Helvetia, Randolph County, the second of six children to the late Ernest and Henrietta Hofer. She completed her last two years of high school in Elkins, West Virginia in 1935. Following her graduation on 1938 from Mountain State Business College in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Mildred was employed by Hagan's Ice Cream Company in Parkersburg. She married Raymond Betler, October 4, 1941 and moved into the home he had built for them in Nutter Fort. Mildred was a wonderful wife and mother to their five children. Mildred was active in PTA and Band Boosters while her children were in school. During her lifetime Mildred was a member of the Helvetia Zion Presbyterian Church and the First Baptist Church of Nutter Fort. At the time of her death, she was a charter member of the Freedom Southern Baptist Church in Nutter Fort. She taught Sunday school classes, sang in the choir, served on the floral committee, was active in the women's group and attended mission conferences. Mildred was an accomplished gardener and seamstress and enjoyed traveling. She was also known for her involvement in 4-H which began as a child and continued as leader of the Lucky Horseshoe 4-H Club in Nutter Fort. She was honored as 4-H Leader of the Year. Mildred maintained a connection to 4-H as a long time member of the Homemaker "Ladybugs" of Harrison County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband Raymond and her siblings- Wilma Hofer, Genevieve Hofer, Margaret Wegman and Ernest "Fred" Hofer, as well as her son Michael and daughter Eileen. Surviving are her sister, Lena Mealey of Elkins; her children Charlotte Hughes and husband M. William "Bill" of Lewes, DE; Susan Reynolds and husband Charles of Hollywood, MD; Nancy Maunz and husband Michael of Clarksburg; daughter-in-law Betty Scott and husband Max of Easton, MD; three grandchildren- David Reynolds and wife Christine of West Long Branch, NJ; Raymond Betler of Morgantown, WV; and Shay Maunz of Charleston, WV. Family and friends will be received at the Davis Funeral Home, One Olen Thomas Drive/Rt. 98, W, Clarksburg from 4:00pm -8:00pm on Friday, March 8, 2013. Services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 10:30 with Reverend Don Fowler and Reverend Jim Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Pickens, WV.
