Stella Walker Backus

Stella Walker Backus, 74, of Greenbrier Community near Salem passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at United Hospital Center following an extended illness. She was born in Doddridge County on October 5, 1938, the daughter of the late Denver M. Stout and Leon V. Reed Stout. She was educated in Doddridge County and then married William Walker who preceded her in death in April 1996. She is survived by her husband, Francis Backus, whom she married October 22, 1998. Surviving are her children, Terry Walker (Susan) of West Union, Debbie Reger (Harold) of Reynoldsville, Pamela Speece (Jr.) of Doddridge County, Sandy Gain (Sam) of Salem, Theresa Gain (Toby) of Clarksburg; Grandchildren, B. J. , Garrett, Justin, Skyler, Harold, Jr. ,Roadie, Tamara, Dusty, Eli, Cazzie, and Zack. Also sixteen great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, a sister Ann Branner and brother Melbur Stout. Mrs. Backus was employed by Harrison County Board of Education for 30 years as a school bus driver, a job that she enjoyed very much. She loved the children and remembered many of them over the years as they did her. Her request was that these children visit the family during this time to let them know how Stella touched their lives. She also enjoyed riding horses, bowling, gardening, doing jigsaw puzzles and growing flowers but spending time with her family and grandchildren was her greatest pleasure. Stella was Christian by faith. Friends may call at Greathouse Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 4-8PM and Friday from 4-7 PM. A funeral service will be held following visitation on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 7:00PM with Rev. Denver Burnside presiding. The body will be cremated and inurnment will take place at the Walker Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
